Efforts are in full swing to tackle mobility challenges at Cancun International Airport, a key gateway to the Mexican Caribbean and one of the busiest airports in the region. Bernardo Cueto Riestra, Secretary of Quintana Roo Tourism, announced a comprehensive plan to address these issues, aiming to enhance the experience for millions of tourists arriving at the airport each year.
Transportation issues at the Cancun International Airport have plagued tourists for years, with irregular services and fluctuating prices being among the main complaints. Cueto Riestra emphasized that these concerns are being addressed under a new tourism model initiated by Governor Mara Lezama. This approach prioritizes competitiveness and traveler satisfaction.
“For years, the government of Quintana Roo remained unaware of the problems at the airport,” Cueto noted. “With this new model, we aim to position ourselves as a competitive tourist destination and improve the overall experience for our visitors.”
Among the immediate steps being taken are:
Cueto announced a crackdown on unauthorized transportation companies that have operated at the airport with impunity for years. These services have often led to confusion and dissatisfaction among tourists, as they operate outside the bounds of regulation. The Secretary confirmed that such companies would no longer be allowed to function at Cancun International.
Transportation fees from the airport have long been subject to the law of supply and demand, often leading to exorbitant rates for tourists. To address this, a standardized pricing system is being developed. Cueto stated, “There is no base rate currently, which allows certain operators to exploit travelers. We are working to establish fair, consistent rates for all passengers.”
A recent work group meeting between state officials and the airport management company focused on fine-tuning operations to better serve travelers. Key topics included:
Governor Mara Lezama highlighted the importance of these efforts, stating that improved infrastructure and services are crucial for sustaining tourism growth.
For years, travelers arriving at Cancun Airport faced challenges ranging from outdated policies to logistical inefficiencies. Earlier this year, a significant milestone was achieved when the Mexican government eliminated an outdated electronics tax that disproportionately impacted tourists. This change, effective as of October, reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing its approach and removing barriers to travel.
The current focus extends beyond transportation. Infrastructure upgrades are being implemented to accommodate the growing number of visitors. These improvements include:
The Quintana Roo government is positioning itself as a leader in tourism innovation through this comprehensive overhaul. The new model seeks not only to resolve existing challenges but also to set a standard for excellence in airport management and tourist services. This aligns with the broader vision of making the Mexican Caribbean a top-tier destination.
The transportation and mobility upgrades at Cancun International Airport are part of a larger strategy to elevate the region’s tourism industry. By addressing issues that have lingered for years, the state aims to provide a seamless and enjoyable experience for all travelers. With enhanced infrastructure, fair pricing, and streamlined operations, Cancun is poised to strengthen its position as a global travel hub.
The efforts to improve transportation at Cancun International Airport represent a significant step forward for Quintana Roo’s tourism sector. By tackling long-standing issues and implementing a competitive tourism model, the region is set to enhance its appeal to both new and returning visitors. The commitment to fairness, efficiency, and traveler satisfaction underscores the government’s dedication to fostering sustainable growth and positioning Cancun as a premier destination.
